HOW ROTARY CLUB CHERAS WAS STARTED

Arising from the need to start a new club for the Chinese-speaking community in Cheras, a "Rotary Awareness" project was launched by Rotary Club Pudu in Salak South New Village . The response to form a bilingual English and Mandarin Club was encouraging, prompting Rotary Club Pudu to act as sponsor and start the ball rolling to charter Rotary Club Cheras.

The first interest lunch meeting was called on January 25, 1996 at Federal Hotel, Kuala Lumpur with 19 potential members. Subsequently, more lunch meetings were held at Wentworth Hotel, KL every Tuesday. By September, membership had reached 30. A weekly news bulletin was also produced.

The first General Meeting to elect the Charter Board of Directors was held on October 1, 1996. Rtn Dato Dr Lim Thung Seng, a Rotarian for 13 years was elected as Charter President. The Charter Board members were: Chin Kon Fock (VP), Guan Chin Kong (Secretary), Eric Tan A Lek (Treasurer), Service Directors: Chow Thean Choy (Club); Leng Kim Hock (Vocational); Su Pi Ju (Community); Chong Toh Sang (International) and Jamaluddin Ibrahim (New Generation). The Charter List consisted of 28 Charter Members.

Rotary International Branch office in Manila, the Philippines approved the establishment of Rotary Club Cheras and granted the charter on October 23, 1996.

The Charter Installation Dinner was held on November 21, 1996 at the Equatorial Hotel, Kuala Lumpur. YB Goh Cheng Teik, the then Deputy Minister of Land & Cooperative Development was the Guest of Honour.
