"Together We Make Dreams Real for the Single Mothers"
By Buddy Clubs RC Cheras & RC Metro Ipoh
Launching of Computer Course for Single Mothers on June 1, 2009 in Ipoh
A total of 25 single mothers will pick up computer skills and improve their standard of living, thanks to computer course project organised jointly by buddy clubs RC Cheras and RC Metro Ipoh. District Governor Dr Rajindar Singh, accompanied by 1st Lady PP Surendra, graced the launching ceremony of the computer course on June 1 at Florex Restaurant. The launch was held in conjunction with another literacy project, Dictionaries Presentation for 22 schools by RC Metro Ipoh on the same day. Thus, June 1 marked a very meaningful “Literacy Day” for the 2 buddy clubs who formalized their buddy club relationship in February 2009..
RC Cheras President Simon Wong, accompanied by PE Stone Wong, PP Alex Chan, AG Bina and PP Susan Tu was in ipoh on Monday morning to give their full support. President Pushpa of RC Teluk Intan lent her moral support with her surprise attendance.
The single mothers are members of the Perak Chinese Single Mothers Association. They attended the launch in full force led by Ms Kwan Meng Choo, President of Perak Chinese Single Mothers Association. These 25 ladies will learn how to use the Microsoft Office suite of programmes as well as how to enter the world of cyberspace using Internet tools.
The whole course runs for 4 weekends from 9 am to 6 pm at the YMCA, Ipoh, and is financed by a grant from the Crocodile Foundation and Rotary District 3300. Preparations and funding were co-ordinated by PP Susan Tu from RC Cheras and PP Jacky Tan from RC Metro Ipoh with the help of IT consultant IPP Nagesh Mahajan from RC USJ. This project is a fine example of community service provided by Rotary clubs in Malaysia and around the world.

Many dreams were made ‘real' for many people on March 15, 2009. Close to 100 children from Sunbeam Home, Cheras realized their dream of a library with books and computers. Rotary Club Cheras, together with its sister club in Taiwan, achieved their objective in community work by giving this gift.
The timing was perfect as March is Rotary's Literacy Month. The library project is RC Cheras' biggest project to date in monetary terms, valued at RM75,000. This was made possible with District Dedicated Funds (DDF) from Rotary International and a matching grant from sister club Yuan Lin Central, Taiwan. The library, located on the first floor of a shop house, is fully air-conditioned and equipped with books and flat-screen computers. Both English and Chinese books on various topics were purchased for the library.
This project comes under the purview of PP Lim Yok Kee, Chairman for Service Projects, who made a personal financial contribution to the project. He was assisted by RC Cheras members and other Rotary friends who contributed their time, services and supplies.

Insight into dengue and chikungunya
Chartered President Dato' Dr Lim, a specialist in immunology, gave Rotarians and guests an overview of the dengue and chikungunya diseases. Viruses spread by mosquitoes cause the two illnesses. Symptoms for both ailments include headache, joint pain and fever. However, chikungunya being self-limiting is not life threatening compared with dengue.
Dato' Dr Lim explained that there is no vaccine for the two diseases. Prevention called for everyone to play their part to reduce places for mosquito breeding. All home owners are advised to check their garden and potted plants. The local authorities will only fog affected areas. He noted that infected patients must also ensure that mosquitoes do not bite them again.
President Simon announced that our sister club, Rotary Club of Trang, Thailand has received approval for a matching grant by Rotary Foundation. The funds will go to their community service project for eye and cataract operations. Following earlier pledges, PP Yoke Kee will contribute US$3,000 to the project.
Cheras Rotarians enjoyed a triple celebration with the birthday of RC Cheras, birthday of PP Johnson and the wedding anniversary of PE Stone Wong (all in October). The good company and delicious cake marked a very special occasion.

This was followed by dinner and fellowship where Dr Rajindar shared many suggestions on how to improve the club..
PP Susan Tu summarised on the budget required by the various Chairmen for various activities under Club, Public Relations, Rotary Foundation and Membership Development. The total funding for such activities can be matched with our annual RM1,000 per member fund raising/contribution.
The club has decided to motivate members, especially new members, to participate in District seminars and training by appointing certain members to attend and sponsoring the fees. They will then give a summary of such seminars at our club meeting.
Following our earlier success, effective September, monthly Guest Cocktails are being planned to increase publicity for the club and attract new members. Extra funding for meals and printing of English and Chinese flyers are already budgeted.
